Juanacatlán Falls, on the Santiago River in western Mexico, is the particular subject here, a cascade that drew photographers from the United States in the late nineteenth century as part of a wider interest in Mexican scenery. This glass transparency, dated between 1880 and 1897, is attributed to William Henry Jackson, the American photographer who traveled widely in Mexico and whose views were sold through the Detroit Publishing Company. The record ties it to the company's 1898 catalog, which offered such scenes as travel images for popular audiences. Its survival as a large 11 by 14 inch glass positive shows the care given to these views for projection and display.
