The Erie Canal at Little Falls, in the Mohawk Valley of central New York, is the particular place this negative records, a town where the canal had to climb and descend through a narrow gorge carved by the Mohawk River. The canal opened across the state in 1825 and carried grain, lumber and manufactured goods between the Hudson River and the Great Lakes, so barges like those in the view were a common sight along its towpath. The negative is a 5 by 7 inch glass plate, and its record links it to the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American scenery and commerce for decades, and to the W.H. Jackson catalog, which suggests the photograph may be Jackson's work.
