Rather than a view of a place, this glass negative records a painting: a copy of a work signed by Irving R. Bacon, an American illustrator, and titled *Little old man of the woods*. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold photographs and reproductions of art and scenery in the early twentieth century, made the copy, so the image gives us the painting itself rather than an original scene. Reproductions like this circulated widely as postcards and prints in the years between about 1900 and 1920, when illustrated magazines and popular picture markets were expanding.
