A European figure in a metal helmet fires on Native people while others in the scene look on, a composition that freezes a moment of conquest into a single confrontation. The record describes this as a photograph of a painting, possibly by Jean Leon Gerome Ferris, and places the subject in Spanish colonization of the 16th or 17th century. Ferris, an American painter who worked into the 1920s, made many romanticized canvases of frontier and early American history, so the picture shows how later generations imagined encounters between Europeans and Indigenous peoples. The glass negative dates from roughly 1910 to 1930, when the Detroit Publishing Company was reproducing paintings and scenes for wide circulation.
