Few details of the setting survive for this one, but the scene is plain: a man working along a roadside, cutting back brush to keep the way open. The plate is a 5 by 7 inch glass negative made by copying an existing photographic print, a common way early collections preserved views whose originals were lost or never kept. It belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company collection, the firm that sold landscapes and street scenes across the country from the 1890s into the 1920s, and it came in as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. The title was supplied by the cataloger, so the exact task and place remain open to interpretation.
