Mission Santa Barbara, founded by Franciscan friars in 1786 and recognized by its twin bell towers, is the subject of this glass-plate negative, made sometime between 1910 and 1930. The photographer is not recorded, and the title was supplied by a cataloger, but the view reflects a period when the California missions were drawing tourists and being celebrated as symbols of the Spanish colonial past. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many scenic views of the West in this era, but this plate carries no company number, so its link to that firm is unconfirmed. The negative entered the collection as a gift in 1949 from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
