Emilie Painter Jackson poses three-quarter length beside a chair in this glass dry-plate portrait, a format common in studio work around the turn of the twentieth century. She was the wife of William Henry Jackson, the photographer known for his survey views of the American West and his later work with the Detroit Publishing Company. The negative, measuring 8 by 5 inches, dates from sometime between 1880 and 1910 and came to the State Historical Society of Colorado as a gift in 1949. Jackson reproduced the picture opposite page 222 of his 1940 memoir, *Time Exposure*, where it appears among his own accounts of his life and work.
