The subject is a touring car built by the Northern Manufacturing Company of Detroit, shown here in a three-quarter view that lets the viewer see both the long body and the front of the machine. Dating from roughly 1900 to 1905, it captures the early years of the American automobile, when carmakers were still refining designs that would soon become standard. The image survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for documenting Michigan's growing industries and for its commercial photography of the period. Its early origin and careful composition make it a useful record of the car as a product of Detroit's rising manufacturing economy.
