This 11 by 14 inch glass negative shows a bare automobile chassis with its engine exposed, a view that reveals the frame, drivetrain, and engine of a Northern Manufacturing Company vehicle. Dated between 1900 and 1910, when the gasoline automobile was still new and makers were settling on their basic layouts, the picture captures the mechanical parts that defined a car before any body was fitted. Detroit Publishing Company photographers recorded many manufacturing and industrial subjects alongside their scenic views, and the large plate gives the machinery considerable detail.
