A rear three-quarter view of a Northern Manufacturing Company automobile, this 8 x 10 inch glass negative shows the car's body, wheels, and rear fittings at close range. Northern was a Detroit-area automaker that built motorcars in the first decade of the 1900s, when cars were still new enough that manufacturers relied on clear photographs to show off their designs. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this negative, produced large numbers of views of American cities, industry, and transportation during this period, and its glass plates now preserve a detailed record of early automobile design.
