This glass negative records a painting of Mrs. Robert Weir, identified in the title as Lucretia Tuckerman, hanging at the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts. Rather than showing the sitter directly, it documents the canvas itself, so the image preserves a work of art as it was displayed in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many such copies of paintings and sculptures in museum collections, which were sold as affordable views of art to schools, travelers and households. Its numbered series, like this one labeled M95, helped make American museum holdings widely known beyond the places where the originals hung.
