Hortense Mancini, Duchesse de Mazarin, is the sitter in this reproduction of a painting by Nicolaes Maes, a Dutch artist who trained under Rembrandt. Hortense (1646-1699) was one of the celebrated Mancini sisters, nieces of Cardinal Mazarin, who rose at the French court. She later left her husband and spent much of her life in England, where she moved in the circle of Charles II. The picture is a copy: the Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1907, recording the surface of an older work rather than the sitter herself.
