Little Falls, New York, sits where the Mohawk River drops through a narrow rocky gorge, and that drop drew mills and factories to its banks. The Erie Canal was routed alongside the river here, so the falls, the canal and the mill buildings all competed for space in the valley. This 5 by 7 inch glass negative dates from roughly 1880 to 1887, and its attribution to the photographer William Henry Jackson rests on a match of title with a view listed in his 1898 catalog. The negative later passed through the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many views of American towns and waterways in the decades around 1900.
