Guadalajara, the capital of the Mexican state of Jalisco, is the setting here, and the picture shows its penitentiary, a subject that the Detroit Publishing Company photographers and their contemporaries rarely turned to. The date is an estimate, placed sometime between 1890 and 1897, when the company was selling views of Mexico and other places to American travelers. The print is credited to the photographer William Henry Jackson only by inference, because its title matches a numbered view in his 1898 catalog. Its glass negative is an 8 by 5 inch plate, which gives the image more detail than a small print would show.
