The Parliament buildings on Ottawa's hilltop appear here as they stood before 1916, when a fire destroyed the central center Block. Queen Victoria chose Ottawa as the capital of the Province of Canada in 1857, and the Gothic Revival complex rose over the following decade on a bluff above the Ottawa River. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns and landscapes across North America in the 1890s and early 1900s, made this glass negative, and its catalog notes suggest the view may have been taken from nearby Major's Hill Park.
