This glass negative records a serpentine bust of Centeotl, the Aztec god of maize, held at the National Museum in Mexico City. Carved from dark green serpentine, the stone head is a rare example of Mexica sculpture in that material, and the photograph shows its heavy, carefully worked features. The negative is attributed to the American photographer William Henry Jackson, who documented Mexico's antiquities and landscapes in the 1880s and 1890s. Its later place in the Detroit Publishing Company collection reflects how such images were circulated as souvenirs and reference views of Mexico.
