Horseshoe Canyon, a deep, curving recess in the sandstone bluffs at Starved Rock along the Illinois River near La Salle, is the subject of this large glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold scenic views of American towns, parks and natural wonders, dates the plate to the 1890s based on its 1901 catalog. The 14 by 11 inch format gave the company's photographers fine detail in rock walls and foliage. Starved Rock, now an Illinois state park, drew visitors by rail and steamboat, and views like this one helped turn its shaded canyons into a destination.
