Wildcat Canyon is one of the narrow, wooded ravines cut into the sandstone bluffs along the Illinois River, and this view looks up its rocky floor toward the water. The Detroit Publishing Company made the large glass negative sometime between 1890 and 1901, when the firm was documenting American scenery and travel destinations. The area did not become Starved Rock State Park until the 1910s, so the photograph shows the canyon before its formal protection.
