Shamrock II, Sir Thomas Lipton's British challenger, is shown at the finish of an October 3, 1901, race in the America's Cup series. Lipton, a tea merchant, sent the yacht across the Atlantic hoping to win back the trophy, but the American defender Columbia took the series. The picture survives as a large glass negative, 18 by 22 inches, made by the Detroit Photographic Company, whose mammoth plates recorded American scenes for decades. It was copied from a photograph by H.G. Peabody taken that month.
