The name on this glass negative points to Sir Thomas Lipton's yacht *Shamrock*, which challenged for the America's Cup in 1899. The record says only that the plate is probably from those races, and the penciled "Johnston" on the negative is unexplained. Lipton, a tea merchant, made several unsuccessful bids for the cup, and his challenges drew wide attention in American and British newspapers. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American scenery and events, made this 8 x 10 inch plate, which was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949.
