The first thing to notice about this picture is its size and format: it is a mammoth-plate glass negative, roughly 18 by 22 inches, and it captures only the right half of a two-part panorama of the Evans Hotel in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large-format views of towns, resorts, and landmarks across the United States, catalogued the scene under panorama number 037604. Hot Springs, in the southern Black Hills, was known for its warm mineral springs and drew visitors seeking health cures in the decades around 1900, so a hotel there would have served a steady stream of guests. The two negatives in the collection are near-identical variants, and the set reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
