The Gran Hotel Inglaterra stood on Parque Central in Havana, a busy square in the Cuban capital that drew travelers, merchants, and officials around the turn of the twentieth century. This photochrom print, dated about 1900, shows the hotel in vivid color, a result of a process that combined several lithographic stones, each inked in a different hue, and was often finished by hand. The Detroit Publishing Company produced such images in large numbers and assembled them into albums for its own office, so this example also served as a working catalog of the firm's offerings. Its color and detail make it a useful record of how the city presented itself to visitors in that period.
