The print shows the terraced travertine formations at the top of the Pulpits, part of Mammoth Hot Springs in what is now Yellowstone National Park. The terraces form as hot water rising through limestone deposits calcium carbonate as it cools and meets the air, and the layered steps grow slowly over time. The photographer, William Henry Jackson, had worked in the Yellowstone region with the Hayden Survey in 1871, and his views helped make the park's geysers and springs familiar to the public. This albumen print, made around 1892, is a good example of how such scenes were documented and sold in the decades after the park was established in 1872.
