Unlike the many views of Southern landscapes on this board, this one shows a road running through open cotton fields on a plantation near Richland, Mississippi. Cotton was the dominant crop across the Mississippi Delta and surrounding counties in the late 1800s, and roads like this one carried wagons, workers, and cotton bales between fields and markets. The print was made by the Detroit Photographic Company, which later became the Detroit Publishing Company, using a large-format "mammoth plate" camera that recorded fine detail in the fields and sky. Its mounting on linen and its pairing with a second Richland view suggest it was made for an album or a set of presentation prints.
