Few pictures in the set show the machinery that turned raw cotton into marketable fiber, and this interior view of the gin at Dahomey, in Mississippi's Delta country, does. The Detroit Photographic Company made it in the late 1880s or 1890s, when cotton ginning was among the region's most important industries. Gins like this one separated seed from lint, and the photograph lets viewers see the belts, frames, and crowded workspace that made the process possible. The print is mounted on linen and back to back with a companion view of cotton fields, a pairing that suggests it was meant to be seen as part of a larger sequence.
