Dansville, in the hills of Livingston County in western New York, appears here in a wide mammoth-plate panorama that spreads the whole village across the frame. Made around 1900 by the Detroit Photographic Company, which later became the Detroit Publishing Company, the view reflects that firm's specialty in large-format scenes of American towns and landscapes. Dansville was known in the late nineteenth century as a health resort, where visitors came for the water cure and country air. The print is mounted on linen, a practice that helped large views withstand handling.
