Titled for Richland Cotton Plantation in Mississippi, this photograph is one of the few in the collection to pair a working plantation with a river crossing, a combination the record's subject tags make clear. It was made sometime between 1885 and 1898, when cotton was still the dominant crop across the Mississippi Delta and much of the South, and its inclusion in the catalog of the W.H. Jackson Views (1898) reflects how widely such scenes were sold as regional views. The print is mounted on linen and shares its backing with a companion image titled "Cotton Fields," so the two were likely meant to be seen together.
