Few mountains in America were as easy to reach by 1901 as Pike's Peak, the 14,000-foot summit in the Front Range near Colorado Springs. Since the Manitou and Pike's Peak Cog Railway opened in 1891, visitors could ride a rack railway to the top, and the summit became one of the West's best-known tourist destinations. This large-format view, made by the Detroit Publishing Company, belongs to the firm's catalog of scenic views sold to travelers and collectors. The peak took its name from Zebulon Pike, who sighted it in 1806 while exploring the southern plains.
