The west facade of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., is the subject here, a view of the building that opened in 1897 as the Jefferson Building. Its architects, John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, drew on Italian Renaissance design, and the monumental stonework was meant to show the young nation's ambitions for learning. This print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large-format views of American landmarks for travelers around 1900. Its cyanotype process gives the print a distinctive blue-toned surface, and the company listed it in its 1901 catalog.
