Working in Arizona around 1910, a Hopi woman shapes a clay vessel in this large silver gelatin print from the Detroit Publishing Company. Hopi women have long been the potters in their communities, building vessels by hand with coils and smoothing the walls with paddle and anvil, a craft passed between generations and tied to villages on the high mesas of northeastern Arizona. The company sold views like this to a national audience eager for images of Native life, and this mammoth-plate print, about 43 by 53 centimeters, preserves the material details of the work at a time of rapid change in the region.
