The tree at Popotla, a village near the former shore of Lake Texcoco, is tied in local tradition to the summer of 1520, when Hernán Cortés and his forces were driven out of Tenochtitlan in the retreat known as La Noche Triste. Legend holds that Cortés wept beneath this ancient ahuehuete, a cypress native to Mexico. This color photochrom, made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between the mid-1880s and 1900, combines the tree with a nearby church and shows how the process layered several lithographic stones to build up its hues. Its subject reflects the appeal of sites linked to the Spanish conquest for travelers of the period.
