A lone cherry tree stands at the center of this 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, though the catalog notes suggest it may be part of a cherry orchard. The image dates from roughly 1900 to 1905, when the Detroit Publishing Company was producing large numbers of views of landscapes, towns, and farms across the United States, many of which were sold as prints and postcards. Glass negatives like this one were the working originals from which those prints were made, so the plate itself records the company's photographic method of the period. It came to the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
