Toms Creek, in Frederick County, Maryland, is crossed here by a timber railroad trestle, a type of bridge that carried trains over ravines and streams on a framework of repeated supports. The glass negative dates to about 1900 to 1905, when railroads were expanding across rural Maryland and freight and passenger lines needed many such crossings. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this view, sold large numbers of photographs of American rail lines, bridges and scenery, and its pictures give a useful record of how this kind of engineering looked in the early twentieth century.
