Two large glass negatives make up the left and center sections of this three-part panorama of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and the right section is not in the collection. The Detroit Photographic Company, later known as the Detroit Publishing Company, made the view and registered its copyright in 1900. Working with mammoth plates measuring 18 by 22 inches, its photographers captured wide sweeps of American towns and cities around the turn of the century. Scranton, a center of anthracite coal mining in northeastern Pennsylvania, was a busy industrial city at that time, so the view records the working city as much as its streets.
