The landing at Topinabee, on the route of Hamill's Inland Route between Cheboygan and Petoskey, shows a steamboat pier where passengers boarded for a trip through the lakes and channels of northern Michigan rather than across open Lake Huron. Routes like this carried summer visitors to resort towns, and the Detroit Publishing Company made many such views around 1900 to 1910, when railroads and steamers were promoting the region as a holiday destination. This view was made on an 8 x 10 inch glass plate, a format the company used for its large-scale commercial work. The pier and the waiting passengers capture how travel was still organized around the water in that period.
