A lumber barge on an inland water route between Cheboygan and Petoskey, Michigan, is the subject here, with the towns' sawmill and shipping trade shaping the scene. Both towns sit on northern Michigan's lake shore and grew rich on white pine cut from the surrounding forests in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Barges like this one carried sawn lumber and logs along shallow waterways to lake ports, where larger vessels took it to markets across the Great Lakes. The Detroit Publishing Company made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1910, when the company was documenting American towns, industries and scenery for rail travelers and tourists.
