Petoskey's harbor on Little Traverse Bay is the subject here, with its docks and wharves set out along the water in a view made around 1906. The Detroit Publishing Company, which travelled the country photographing towns, resorts and industry for commercial sale, produced this glass-plate negative at a time when Petoskey was a busy lumber and shipping port on Michigan's northern lake shore. Northern Michigan lumber was then moving out by boat, so the piers and vessels show the working waterfront that supported the town before its later growth as a summer resort.
