What sets this view apart is the pairing of a park with an auditorium and a bell, all at Bay View, a summer community on Little Traverse Bay near Petoskey, Michigan. Bay View grew out of a Methodist camp meeting in the 1870s and became known for lectures, concerts, and summer study in the spirit of the Chautauqua movement. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative around 1906 while documenting resorts and scenic places across the country. The picture shows how these assemblies arranged open lawns around the halls where people gathered.
