The Casino at Wequetonsing, on the Lake Michigan shore of Michigan's Little Traverse Bay near Harbor Springs, was the social center of a summer resort colony that drew vacationing families from the Midwest. Photographed around 1906 on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, this view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American resorts, towns and landscapes in large-format photography from the 1890s into the 1920s. The negative's sharp detail records the building's architecture and its lakeside setting, which together show how these resorts were designed for leisure, with gathering spaces for dances, meals and social calls. The plate also carries its Detroit Publishing Company number, 019022, and was later given to the State Historical Society of Colorado, which transferred it in 1949.
