Quincy Street runs through the heart of Hancock, a mining town on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, across the Portage Lake ship canal from Houghton. The street's commercial buildings reflect the copper boom that made the region prosperous in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This view was made around 1906 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced a large body of town and street scenes across the United States in those years. Its 8 x 10 inch glass negative preserves the storefronts and street life of a community that depended on the nearby mines.
