Governor Stannard's cottage stood at Harbor Point, a summer colony on the Little Traverse Bay shore near Harbor Springs, Michigan. In the early 1900s, the area drew well-to-do families who built large wooden cottages with wide porches, where they spent the warm months away from the cities. This glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed resorts and scenery across the country for travel promotion and sold the views as prints and postcards. The picture offers a record of how such summer homes looked when the resort was still taking shape.
