Set in the summer resort community of Wequetonsing on the shore of northern Michigan's Little Traverse Bay, this view shows the Elmer cottage, one of the many lakeside homes built there around the turn of the twentieth century. Wequetonsing drew families from Midwestern cities who came north each summer to escape heat and city life, and their cottages often combined simple porches and shingled walls with easy access to the water. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American places and travel destinations from the 1890s through the 1920s, made this glass-plate negative between 1900 and 1905, and its surviving images give a useful picture of how these seasonal retreats looked before later development changed them.
