The Hay cottage stands in Wequetonsing, a summer colony on the shore of Little Traverse Bay in northern Michigan. Lakeside cottages like this one were a familiar sight at resorts around 1900, when city families left the summer heat for cooler shores and built modest wood-frame houses among the trees. The image is a glass dry plate negative in the 8 by 10 inch format that photographers favored for fine detail. It came from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced and sold views of American places to travelers and publishers, and its date places the scene in the early years of the twentieth century.
