The cottages shown here belonged to two summer residents, Messrs. Edgar and Hansen, at Wequetonsing, a lakeside resort on Little Traverse Bay in northern Michigan near Harbor Springs. Wealthy families from Chicago and other midwestern cities built seasonal cottages in such places to escape city heat, and many resorts of this kind grew up along the Great Lakes in the late 1800s. The Detroit Publishing Company photographed resorts like this around 1900 to 1905 to promote travel by rail and steamer, so the picture also records how leisure living was presented to the public at the time.
