The Reber Cottage stood at Wequetonsing, a summer colony on the shore of Little Traverse Bay in northern Michigan, where wooden cottages were built for families escaping the heat of cities to the south. The glass negative was made between 1900 and 1905 by the Detroit Photographic Company, whose views of resorts, streets, and scenic spots were sold widely as souvenirs and postcards during those years. Pictures like this one record how such summer retreats looked in the early twentieth century, with their porches, shingled walls, and open settings among the trees.
