Harbor Point, on the shore of Little Traverse Bay near Harbor Springs, drew summer visitors from Midwestern cities around 1900, and this glass negative records one of the private cottages built there for those seasonal stays. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of views of resorts, railways and scenic places, made the picture on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, a format that captured fine detail. Images like this one show how summer houses set among trees shaped the character of lakeside resort communities. The record dates it only to between 1900 and 1905.
