A summer cottage in Charlevoix, Michigan, once occupied by former Illinois governor Joseph Wilson Fifer, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative. Fifer led Illinois from 1889 to 1893 and had served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and like many prominent Midwesterners of his day, he spent time at the lakeside resort on Lake Michigan's shore. The Detroit Publishing Company made commercial views of American towns and scenery around 1900 to 1905, and this picture records the modest resort architecture that drew visitors to northern Michigan.
