The title "Shearwater" is the only place-specific detail in the record, and it does not say whether the name refers to a location, a vessel, or something else, so the subject remains open. The glass negative is an 8 x 10 inch plate dated July 10, 1895, and it carries a Detroit Publishing Company number, although the record notes that the attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering. The company grew out of the Detroit Photographic Company, which was best known for its large-scale travel views and for photochrom color prints made from such negatives. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, a useful reminder of how many of these western and regional views moved between institutions.
