This negative captures a timed trial for a horse named Norwood, whose own inscription on the glass notes a mile run in 2:12 1/2, a fast pace for harness racing in the early 1890s. The plate is dated November 6, 1891, and was made as a dry plate negative, the standard method of the period for capturing action and portraits. Late nineteenth-century trotting and pacing were popular spectator sports, and the trial times were closely watched by owners, breeders, and the public. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued photographs of American places and scenes, catalogued the plate. Its attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering, so the photographer is not confirmed.
