Catalogued simply as "Javelin," this is an 8 by 10 inch glass-plate negative dated August 1891, and the record gives no further description of its subject. Its number places it within the Detroit Publishing Company's output, though the catalogers note that this attribution rests on the style of the title and numbering rather than a signed credit. The plate was a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado, which suggests it passed through Western collections before reaching the Library of Congress. Glass negatives of this period were the working originals from which prints were made, so the surviving sheet is worth viewing for its tonal detail and for what it shows of the photographic methods of its time.
